This used to just be called ‘life’.
What’s a simple pleasure in life that brings you joy?
I gotta say, if the simple pleasures in life brought most of us joy, we wouldn’t continually try to find it elsewhere.
Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe the restlessness associated with constantly inventing and innovating is natural, and even good to a degree. Although, just looking around at the world at present, one might question where the natural stopping point is, if there is even one at all.
Maybe inner poverty ought to be our focus, at least those of us whose basic needs are met (basic in the most basic sense, not the inflated 21st century sense).

1. The Bible – As the Word of the Creator of the universe it is sometimes heavy-going in parts, brutally honest about human nature and is uncommonly crystal clear about what God requires of humanity, you and I. But that is not the surprising part. The surprising part is how funny it can be (we are a reflection of our Creator after all; we have a sense of humour because He does), how practical a lot of the advice is (contrary to popular perception – check our Proverbs if you want proof, or any of the New Testament books) and most surprising of all, the incomprehensible amount of mercy and grace in its pages, communicating the love God has for humanity despite our obvious undeservingness.
2. The Stories from East High books, which are based on the High School Musical franchise. This might seem an unlikely candidate, but the books are surprisingly well-written and (in my opinion) richly delve into the characters as they are presented in the canon. Well worth a read if you’re a fan of the movies.
3. The Malcolm in the Middle books – Just like the HSM books, these present new storylines using the world and characters of the canon. Will appeal especially to boys, as they centre the experiences of boys (in a lower middle class American environment).
4. My own writing (as yet unpublished) – I am often taken aback by some of the things I come up with.

Someone shows up, unscheduled. No special occasion, no official business to transact, no agenda…just one person being a witness to another’s being, in the ordinary. One soul intentionally deciding to prioritise another, without prompting. To sit side by side in whatever is going on, unhurried, unperturbed, whether smile or pain, hands ready to work in whatever capacity necessary. A desire of the heart that cannot be manufactured, arising to meet its complement, like a jug being poured into a glass, in beautiful synergy.
